How to work out the load

Load = bed weight + soil + water after watering. You'll find how much a litre of soil weighs on the packaging or the technical sheet. The calculator works out the total weight and the kilograms per m² of floor space the bed takes up.

A patio on the ground and a balcony aren't the same

A ground-level patio or paving on solid ground passes the load down into the base beneath it. For a balcony, loggia or a roof over a living room, the structure's load capacity and waterproofing matter. Check with your building manager or a structural engineer first.

Where the water drains to

Think about where the water from watering will go. On paving or a wooden deck, it's worth having a base that lets water through and protects the floor, plus a gap the water can drain through to an outlet.
