How much sand for the sandbox
Sand volume = inner area × layer depth. Inside is 42½ × 42½ in, so every centimeter of sand equals 0 cu ft. The frame is 7 in high, so plan a sand layer of at most 6 in to keep the sand below the edge.
| Sand depth | Volume | m³ |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in | 4 cu ft | 0.2 |
| 4¾ in | 5 cu ft | 0.2 |
| 6 in | 6 cu ft | 0.2 |
Sand is sold in bags by weight and loose by the m³. You'll find how much a liter weighs on the packaging.

What to put under the sand
Lay a permeable geotextile on the bottom. Water drains through it and the sand won't mix with the soil. Geotextile and sand aren't included in the package.
Seat and safety
The wide top edge works as a bench for parents and a spot for kids to put down toys. The parts snap together, so there are no sharp metal joints within a child's reach. The larch 2⅜ in has no chemical treatment.
When the kids grow up
You can turn the sandbox into a raised garden bed: swap the sand for soil. You'll design a different size in Studio from the same parts.
