Frequently asked questions about larch raised garden beds
Wood, dimensions, assembly, filling, shipping, benches and tables. For price, lifespan, delivery and warranty, see the questions on the home page.
Wood and material
Wood, rot and how materials compare.
What is the best wood for raised garden beds?
For a bed that should last for years without chemicals, choose wood that is naturally resistant to rot and has a thick wall. That is why we use solid European larch, 2⅜ mm thick, in durability class 3–4 under EN 350, with no chemical treatment. Larch is a softwood conifer. Wall thickness matters for lifespan as much as the type of wood, because thin boards bend and rot sooner.
Wood, metal, WPC or concrete: which is better for a raised garden bed?
What decides it is lifespan, weight, warmth at the roots, appearance and whether you can change the bed later. A metal bed has thin walls and heats up quickly in the sun, while a concrete one is heavy and stays in one place for good. Solid wood, 2⅜ mm thick, buffers both heat and frost, and a larch bed lasts 15–25 years. We sell only wooden beds, not other materials.
Will the wood rot when it is always in contact with damp soil?
Larch is naturally rot-resistant, durability class 3–4 under EN 350, so it withstands damp soil without chemical treatment. Standing water shortens its life the most. Place the bed on a base that lets water through and leave it open to the ground so the water can drain away.
Sizes and changes
Sizes and extending a bed.
What bed sizes and heights are available?
Can I make a bed higher, wider or rebuild it later?
Yes. The parts join without screws or glue, so you can make the bed higher with extra layers, lengthen it, or take it apart and rebuild it in a different shape. The blocks are not damaged in the process. You order any missing parts using the parts list from the Studio.
Placement and assembly
Base, instructions and beds on a balcony.
What should I put a raised garden bed on?
A level, firm base that lets water through, such as lawn, soil or gravel. Level it before assembly so the bottom layer sits flat on its whole area and the bed does not twist. On a slope, set the bed on leveled terraces, and the steps are on the garden on a slope page.
Can I put a raised garden bed on a patio or balcony?
On a patio yes, on a balcony only after checking the load capacity. A filled bed weighs hundreds of kilograms, so what matters is the load capacity of the structure, which a structural engineer or the building manager can confirm. Bed weights and advice on the base are on the raised garden bed for a patio page.
Filling and growing
Filling, watering, voles and winter.
What and how many liters should I fill a raised garden bed with?
The volume is inner length × width × height, for example a 70¾ × 35½ m bed with a height of 21¼ cm holds about 1 cu ft. Put coarser material such as branches and leaves at the bottom, compost above it and good-quality bed soil on top. The soil calculator works out the volume and layers for your size.
How do I protect a bed from voles and moles?
Before filling, lay fine-mesh vole wire on the bottom and bring it up to the walls of the bed. The wire lets water through, so drainage is kept. The wire is not included in the delivery, and you can buy it at a garden center.
How do I water a raised garden bed?
A raised garden bed dries out faster than a bed in the ground, so water it more often in summer, ideally in the morning. A drip hose under a layer of mulch takes the least work. The Irrigation view in the Studio suggests the zones, nozzles and hose lengths for you.
What should I do with the bed in winter?
The bed can stay outside all year, larch withstands frost and you do not need to take it apart. In fall cover the soil with compost, leaves or mulch so it is not washed out and is crumbly in spring.
Shipping
How and where we deliver.
How much does shipping cost and how does the order arrive?
The cart calculates the shipping cost from the weight of the goods and the delivery address, so you see it before you pay. Everything arrives unassembled as a compact set of parts. Smaller orders are sent by courier, large ones on a pallet. Delivery times and countries are on the Shipping and returns page.
Seating
Benches and tables outdoors, the same system.
Can larch benches and tables stay outside all year?
Yes. The benches, table and seating set are made of the same solid larch, 2⅜ mm thick, as the beds and are built to stay outside all year, in heat, frost and rain. Without treatment the wood turns gray, which does not harm its strength. You can keep the warm tone with outdoor wood oil once or twice a year.
Are the benches and tables from the same system as the beds?
Yes. The benches, table, seating set and sandbox are made of the same larch blocks as the beds and assemble the same way, without screws or glue. You order them as ready-made sets in the Seating and Kids' garden collections.
